Sheyla Mesa earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Florida International University. She earned her Juris Doctor from Florida International University College of Law.
Ms. Mesa has assisted in the effective representation of clients in all aspects of state and federal litigation. She has worked on a wide range of substantive matters within the area of commercial litigation, including cases involving shareholder disputes, appraisal proceedings, mergers of financial institutions, commercial payment mechanisms (negotiable instruments, letters of credit, ACH transactions, drafts and the like), overdraft fee disputes, fraudulent check disputes, regulatory litigation, disputes involving federal consumer financial law (Fair Credit Reporting Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Federal Trade Commission Act, Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act and Truth in Lending Act), internal corporate investigations, fraud actions, insurance coverage matters, contract disputes, commercial lease disputes, foreclosure proceedings involving commercial real estate, loan transactions, and other complex commercial matters.
Ms. Mesa has worked on a wide range of substantive matters within the area of admiralty and maritime law, including cases involving vessel financing, the Limitation of Liability Act, personal injury and wrongful death claims arising under the Jones Act, Death on the High Seas Act, and general maritime law.
Ms. Mesa is admitted to practice in the State of Florida, the District of Columbia, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States District Courts for the Northern, Middle, and Southern Districts of Florida.
